Tikal weather: two seasons, one climate
Tikal has a tropical climate that is warm and humid. Average temperatures run from 24 to 35 °C. The year divides into lower rainfall from about November to April and stronger rainfall from about May to October. In the wetter months, rain falls more often in the afternoon, and paths become slippery.
If you want a sunrise at the temples, the weather matters more than the calendar. Clouds can hide the sun, and nobody can promise a clear sky. The Tikal sunrise tour page explains times, tickets and what to expect.

The two seasons compared
What to expect, month range by month range.
| Season | Months | What to expect | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower rainfall | About November to April | Less frequent showers, still warm and humid | First-time visitors, long days on the temples, easier planning |
| Heavier rainfall | About May to October | Afternoon rain is common and the paths are slippery | Travelers who accept showers and can plan visits for the morning |
For most visitors, the lower-rainfall months from November to April are the easiest choice. Between May and October the park is still open every day, but plan the visit for the morning and allow extra time on wet steps.
Rainfall by month in one recorded year
Flores, 2011. This is one year, not an average, so single months vary.

|---|---|---|---|
| January | 24.4 | July | 229.2 |
| February | 31.0 | August | 272.1 |
| March | 138.7 | September | 401.8 |
| April | 106.8 | October | 529.6 |
| May | 93.6 | November | 138.8 |
| June | 440.5 | December | 138.8 |
The pattern in that year matches the seasons above: the wettest months fall between June and October, the driest in January and February. Use it as an illustration of the rhythm, not as a forecast for your trip.
Heat, rain and the paths
Practical points for a day at the ruins.
Heat
Temperatures of 24 to 35 °C and high humidity make a full day tiring. Start early, carry water and take breaks in the shade of the trees.
Rain
In the wetter months, afternoon rain is common. Wooden stairs and forest paths turn slippery, so wear shoes with grip and take rain protection.
Sunrise and clouds
Special early access starts at about 04:00 and the regular day begins at 06:00. Clouds can cover the sunrise on any morning, and there is no guarantee of a clear view.
Sunrise tour guide →Evening visits
The special evening window runs from about 18:00 to 20:00. It does not promise that the sun sets that late in every season.
If you add El Mirador or Yaxhá
Weather matters more on the longer trips. The El Mirador trek is easier from early December to the end of June. From July to November, mud and flooded areas make it harder, and nobody can promise dry trails. Read the El Mirador guide before you plan the dates.
Yaxhá has its own opening times: the 2026 visitor rules give 08:00 to 17:00. Check them on the Yaxhá page before you build a combined day.
