How to visit El Mirador

Access, season and what to ask.

Authorized guides only

The main route runs from Flores via San Andrés and Carmelita to El Mirador. You travel with a guide committee from Carmelita, Uaxactún or another recognized community, on dates that are reserved and authorized. Book through an operator that arranges this.

Trek: five or six days

The five-day version passes El Tintal and La Muerta before El Mirador. The six-day variant adds La Florida. Pickup in Flores is typically at 04:30 or 05:00. Group sizes in the example offer are 2 to 4 people.

Helicopter

The helicopter day trip is $599 per person for at least 3 people, with 5% extra if you pay by card. It starts at the airport and runs between 08:30 and 14:30, depending on the season. Flights are arranged by date and are not scheduled daily.

Season

Early December to the end of June is the easier period. From July to November, expect mud and flooded sections, which make the walk harder. No season guarantees dry paths.

Choosing between the two

The trek takes most of a week, and the wetter months bring mud. The helicopter fits into one day and needs at least three people on the same date. If you have both time and a group, the trek is the more complete visit. If you have one free day around your Tikal tours, the helicopter is the practical choice.

Permits and fees

Ask each operator whether permits, park fees and food are part of the price before you pay.

Travel advice for the Petén

Check your own government's current travel advice before you go. Austria has rated Petén and the border area with Mexico as security level 3 of 4 since 25 September 2026. It advises against non-essential travel there and suggests flying to Tikal where possible. The German Foreign Office, in advice unchanged since 20 August 2026, points to a risk of robbery also in Flores and Tikal, to possible road blockades and to the need to check your route in advance. It says not to trek alone.

This is a reason to book El Mirador with an authorized guide and to travel in a group.
