Tikal hotels: three places to sleep

Where you stay decides how early you can reach the ruins and how much of the evening you have. Inside the park you wake up next to the forest. In El Remate you are on the lake and on the road to the entrance. In Flores you are 63 km away, about 1 hour by road, with the airport, shuttles and tours close by.

If you plan a Tikal sunrise tour, the base matters most. Special early access starts at about 04:00, and a pickup in Flores leaves earlier still.

For most first-time visitors who arrive by air, Flores is the practical base. If sunrise is the main goal, sleep inside the park or in El Remate.

Staying inside the park

Tikal Inn and Jungle Lodge both run accommodation within the national park. Room prices depend on your dates, so ask each lodge for the total including taxes.

Jungle Lodge asks for at least one park ticket per person during a stay. That is not a free multi-day pass for the ruins. A hotel stay also does not extend opening hours: the regular day is 06:00 to 18:00, and special early or evening visits need a separate ticket and an authorized guide. Tikal Inn offers free private parking to guests without a reservation. Power can be limited at night in some lodges, and some have solar-backed rooms, so ask any lodge about power and air conditioning.

Jungle Lodge also runs an airport shuttle for guests: $19 one way or $28 round trip, with changes possible and a booking at least 48 hours ahead.

Camping at Tikal

A cheaper way to sleep next to the ruins.

The camping area costs GTQ 50 for foreign visitors and GTQ 10 for Guatemalan nationals in 2026, on top of the regular park ticket of GTQ 150. The price is for the camping area, not a room rate. Ask in advance whether a tent, a hammock or bedding is provided, and whether you need to reserve. Buy your tickets as described on the Tikal tickets page.

El Remate on Lake Petén Itzá

El Remate lies on the lake, on the road between Flores and the park. The road from Flores runs on CA-13, turns left at Ixlú toward El Remate and goes on from there to Tikal. The nature reserve of Cerro Cahuí is nearby, 32 km from the Flores island plus 2 km from the local turnoff, with viewpoints over the water.

That is the distance to the reserve, not to every hotel. Ask your hotel how long the drive to the Tikal entrance takes.

Flores Guatemala hotels

The island and the mainland around it.

The historic part of Flores is on an island, joined by a causeway to Santa Elena on the mainland. When you compare hotels, check whether the address is on the island or in Santa Elena, because the airport is on the mainland side and the shuttles meet at the island entrance. Tours, shuttles and trips to Yaxhá and other sites start from Flores.

Read more about the town on the Flores page and about the transfer on how to get to Tikal. When you plan a longer route, see Tikal weather and the best time to visit for the seasons.
