Tikal sunrise tour: how it works
A sunrise visit is a special early entry to the park. You need the regular day ticket, an extra sunrise ticket and an authorised guide. The ticket shop does not sell guides, so the guide comes through a tour or a booking on site. Temple IV is the viewpoint for special visits such as sunrise.
Special access starts at about 04:00, and the regular park opens at 06:00. Pick-up from Flores is earlier. One tour from Flores departs daily at 03:00, takes 9 hours in total and costs $85 in 2026. That is a tour operator's schedule, not a park opening time.

Add the sunset window only if you want a second special visit on the same day. All other prices are on the tickets page.
The view from Temple IV
Temple IV is the highest temple in Tikal. It is about 65 m above its platform and about 70 m above the level of the plaza, measured to the roof comb. These are not the height of the visitor platform.
Temple IV is a viewpoint over the forest. Photos from the area show temple tips above the canopy and morning mist. Clouds can hide the sunrise, and no one can promise a clear view or the mist you see in photos. The temple is also the camera position behind a famous film scene; read more on the Star Wars page.
Climbing is only allowed on the stairs and platforms made for visitors. Access can change after conservation work: in April 2025 it was restricted for two days. Ask your guide and follow the signs on the day.

A sunrise day step by step
The order of the day on a typical early tour.
Pick-up in Flores
The tour departs at 03:00. Tikal is 63 km and about one hour from Flores by road.
Flores →Special access from about 04:00
The early window runs until 06:00. Your guide leads the way to Temple IV, and you stay on the marked paths.
On the platform
From the platform you look out over the forest. Other visitors share the viewpoint with you.
The rest of the day
The regular park opens at 06:00. Talk to your guide about how to use the day. The Gran Plaza and the other complexes are in the temples guide.
Temples →Tikal sunset tour and the evening window
The evening window runs from about 18:00 to 20:00 and also needs the extra ticket and a guide. It does not mean the sun sets then all year, so ask your operator for the plan on your date. Yaxhá is another place for sunset, but its regular hours are 08:00 to 17:00 and sunset visits need a local guide. Read the Yaxhá page before you book.
In the wet season, from about May to October, afternoons bring more rain and the paths get slippery. Check the weather page for the seasons. If you are travelling from Guatemala City or Antigua, you can reach Flores by flight, by bus or by shuttle (see from Guatemala City), and a sunrise start usually means a night in Flores or El Remate.
What to check before you book a Tikal sunrise tour
- Does the price include the day ticket and the sunrise ticket (GTQ 250 for foreign visitors), or only transport and guide?
- What time is the pick-up, and where? Pick-up is earlier than the 04:00 start of special access.
- How long is the tour, and when does it return to Flores? That tour takes 9 hours.
- Which languages does the guide speak?
- What is the plan if clouds hide the sunrise? A refund or a second try is not something you can assume.
