Tikal and Star Wars: the Yavin 4 connection
Tikal appears in Star Wars: A New Hope, released in 1977. Footage from the Maya city stands in for the Rebel base on the moon Yavin 4. The film was shot there in March 1977, and Temple IV is the viewpoint linked to the shot of temple tops rising above the jungle.
The view is real and you can see it yourself. The usual way is a Tikal sunrise at Temple IV, which needs the sunrise ticket and a guide. The Tikal sunrise tour page explains how it works. If you prefer to travel with a group, Tikal tours from Flores include transport and a guide.

What to know about the Star Wars view
The setting is the draw, not a film set.
No separate Star Wars ticket
The Tikal price list has no Star Wars item. You pay the regular entrance, plus the sunrise or sunset supplement if you go at those times.
The view, not an exact frame
Temple IV is the highest temple in Tikal. The platform looks out over the forest, and temple tops rise above the canopy. Do not expect a picture identical to the film. The tree line, the weather and the light change every day.
Access can change
The way up to Temple IV can change after protection or conservation work. In April 2025 access was limited for two days, for example. Check the signs and ask your guide.

Online payments with international cards add 2.30 percent. For most Star Wars fans, the day ticket plus sunrise with a guide is the right choice, because it brings you to the Temple IV viewpoint in the early morning. If you cannot get up that early, a regular day visit is cheaper, but a climb is never guaranteed.
A sunrise trip from Flores leaves at 03:00, takes 9 hours in total and costs $85 in 2026. The park fee and the guide are a separate matter, so check what each offer includes. Park access in the early window starts at about 04:00.
Weather and the morning view
Clouds can hide the sunrise. There is no guarantee of a clear sky or of a view over the canopy, and there is no fixed chance of mist in the morning. If the sky stays gray, you still get the forest sounds and the ruins in soft light.
Bring a flashlight for the early start, a light layer and water. Wear shoes with good grip.

Before you go for the view
Sort these points the day before.
Buy your ticket early
You can buy online with Visa or Mastercard, or pay cash at a BANTRAB bank point at the first park checkpoint, about 20 km before the visitor center. There is no ticket office inside the park, and mobile signal is limited. Bring your ID and the ticket as a PDF or printout.
Allow for the road
Flores is 63 km from Tikal, about 1 hour by road. For a sunrise you leave Flores in the middle of the night, so check the pickup time with your operator.
Book the guide
The state ticket does not include a guide. For early and evening visits a guide is required, so book one yourself or choose a tour that includes one.
